A Fork in the Road
On a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, we were driving around seeking out street food when we came upon this cute little school bus painted bright red down by the river. Parked in a semi empty parking lot at Tulane University Square (a.k.a. Uptown Square) so people can stop and get food to go, Donna Fazzari calls the short bus her new adventure.
Donna spent the last twenty years in California working as a talent agent to the stars. She wanted to open a restaurant, but the costs were daunting, especially in California. Like many aspiring chefs, a food truck is the next option for them to hone their skills and present their culinary vision. Using local ingredients, Donna makes some amazing salads and pressed sandwiches and sometimes has soup specials. She even offers her patrons a picnic table so they don’t have to leave so quickly.

The veggie option: goat cheese, roasted red peppers, artichoke and basil and a meaty one – a traditional Cuban with ham, pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard. All the ingredients of both sandwiches were pressed between some amazing French bread which had a crunch to it you can’t find just anywhere. Sometimes, the bread makes the sandwich. I loved both sandwiches equally as they were prepared with love and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The veggie sandwich though had some amazing bright flavors with the chevre and basil mixed with the roasted red peppers. In addition to the wonderful sandwich, each one was served with a potato salad and three bean salad as sides. Overall, some wonderful food.
A Fork in the Road is an excellent example of why we need more food trucks in this nation. You have an excellent chef in Donna who just wants to feed you her great food and chat a bit. Next time you’re down by Tulane University Square, check out the little red bus and enjoy some great street food.
